Finally got to doing driver side valve cover gasket and now I want to change my oil. I figure it's good to let the old oil cycle through and grab any shit. I've only done 40 miles since the gasket. Should that be enough to sufficiently cycle everything through? Or does that not even make sense to do? The cycling, not the oil change.

Anytime I’ve done anything that I thought might leave the material in the oil, I’ve always done an inexpensive oil change (think Rotella or Motorcraft synthetic) and then let it run for for a week and changed it out for the good stuff (usually Royal Purple). Done that on plenty of turbo, head, and piston swaps without a hitch. Never had the oil tested or anything, but ease of comfort was alyways nice to have. Especially with turbo cars as I’ve always been fearful of material eating up bearings.

When ever I do any kind of oil change, be it my SHO or my lawnmower, i always let it get up to operating temperature, that way the oil picks up any crud that has settled and it thins out the oil a bit so it drains better.

That sounds like a good idea. I'm quite fearful something will explode on my car even though it always seems to be running perfectly fine.

Might as well dump some seafaom in there to get some carbon buildup while you are at it.

Some people change the oil 500 miles into the life of the car to get bits out of a new engine. Probably necessary a long time ago, less so now, but you might want to do 2 changes in quick succession to get rid of anything left over.

Just be glad you don’t have a transverse V6!

As far as the cycling, not really necessary.

You’re good, change it. Preferably while it’s still warm after a shirt drive (helps keep crap suspended in the oil so it makes it out, and provides the opportunity to find out it’s hotter than you expected )

Not sure the valve cover gaskets on a Subaru are any easier.
